Degrees and Certifications:

Mrs. Cheryl Bland

I am a veteran teacher who has taught at every level from adult to second grade.  Currently I co-teach at the middle school level and do intensive reading remediation classes. I am absolutely thrilled to be a part of the inaugural year at Brooke Middle School.

I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree from West Liberty University and a Master’s degree from West Virginia University.  My areas of certification are elementary 1-6, multi-category special education k-12, and autism k-12.  I have taken an additional 75 hours of courses beyond my Bachelor of Arts degree.  Some of my course work centered around Learning Disabilities instruction, Next Generation standards, differentiated instruction, and accessible educational materials with universal design for all learners.

Personal - I am married and have three children who all are Brooke County graduates.  I enjoy walking and bargain shopping in my spare time.  From time to time I participate in 5K walking events.

Supplies - If your child is in the intensive reading remediation program, they will need a one inch three ring binder with five tab dividers.  All other school supplies are the same as the regular class requires.

Philosophy – With the right attitude, proper instructional materials, and a little patience, every learner can read, write, and solve problems. Education should be a top priority in each child’s life.   Homework should not be thought of as drudgery or a punishment, but rather as a means to become more efficient with academic skills.  It is just as important as practice for all other extracurricular activities.

If your child has been given the privilege of being assigned to Academic Intervention during 8th or 9th period at the end of the day, we will plan on doing the following for that time:

  1.  working on class assignments

  2.  completing homework

  3.  completing tests if you need extra time

  4.  reviewing information you did not understand in class

  5.  reviewing skills you did not master in primary school

  6.  reading some current events

This is not free time.  You are not permitted to have a cell phone or visit with others.

I am looking forward to helping you do your best this year.
