I am a teacher today because some of the biggest influences in my life were

teacher/coaches.   In grade School, I was privileged to have Mr. John

DiCesare as my 6th, 7th and 8th grade homeroom teacher. He was not only

my teacher, he was my mentor. He took me under his wing and taught me life

lessons, that would be the basis for the man I was going to be.   He taught me

through his actions and words what character, integrity and honesty are. He

taught me the easy path is not always the right path.   He introduced me to

boxing as well as self help psychology.   He taught me to study, a gift that

would allow me to graduate high school with honors, and finish college with

a very high GPA, while working full time to support my family. In high school

I started wrestling and met three very influential teachers/ coaches. They too,

shaped the man I am today and I am privileged to now work with two of

them. Coach Merle Tournay, Coach Marty Bartz and Coach Joe Starcher taught

me what it is to dedicate yourself to a sport, how quitting is not an option and

if you believe in yourself anything is possible. I will be ever grateful to these

men for being there during my formative years, showing me the greatness that

is in all of them and inspiring me to be the best person I can be.

In addition to starting a work experience program in Logan and Boone County,

a recycling program, a wellness center and a TV station at Follansbee Middle

School, I think my greatest contribution to education is carrying on the teaching

of Mr. Dicesare, Coach Tournay, Coach Bartz and Coach Starcher. I have

mentored students and led by example. I have shown my students that life is

tough.   That you have to believe in yourself before anyone else will and if you

believe it you can achieve it.   I have showed my students what work ethic is,

how to deal with difficult people and how to be part of a team.    I have led

athletes to football, track and wrestling championships, not because I’m a

great coach, but because I am a motivator.   I found ways to bring the best

out of all my athletes both on and off the field.   My students know that life

hits hard and it doesn’t matter how many time you get hit, what matters is

you can take the hit and keep moving forward.
